![]() If the tiles will be played on top of something, their art must mesh attractively with that surface. Whether it’s Carcassonne’s grassy fields, Suburbia’s colorful expanses, or Tsuro’s muted earth, variation and texture are used to keep the entire tile engaging.Ĥ. None of the tiles here have plain backgrounds. Tsuro’s art is simpler, but appropriate for an abstract.ģ. Carcassonne and Suburbia both reinforce their city-building themes with tiles that look like parts of a city. Tile art should connect to the theme of the game. When tiles are central to the game, as they are in these cases, the tile needs to support the game’s play and foremost.Ģ. There is never any ambiguity about whether this connects to that, or which tiles do what. Tsuro, Carcassonne, and Suburbia all put gameplay first in their tiles. A tile’s gameplay implications must be clear. Part of being a good legal researcher is knowing when to stop.ġ. There are many more excellent tile-laying games, but I think the rules are becoming clear. Finally, Suburbia follows Carcassonne’s lead in avoiding dead space on the tiles, filling the center area with art and minimizing the swathes of plain color. They also share an emphasis on ease of reading during play Suburbia’s tiles are more complex than Carcassonne’s, but the use of bright colors and easily-recognized icons still allows them to be taken in at a glance. Image from Boardgamegeekīoth games have thematically appropriate artwork, although in Suburbia’s case this means modern buildings rather than medieval ones. □ Nevertheless, some similar principles underlie the design of their tiles. Absolutely everything else about the games is completely different. Like Carcassonne, Suburbia has players lay tiles to build a city. At the end of the game, the tableau looks appropriate for the period. There are monasteries, walled fortresses, roads, farms. They also have something going on in the background farmland and castle both have some texture, rather than simply being “green space” and “brown space.”Įverything is also consistent with what one might expect of a medieval city. One is never confused about a road’s path or which sides of the tile are part of a castle. ![]() Image from BoardgamegeekĬarcassonne’s tiles are more cheerful than Tsuro’s, but they have the same clarity. Both the aesthetics and the gameplay ride on them. There’s no board, and the other game pieces (at least when playing without expansions) are simple meeples, so the tiles have to do a lot of heavy lifting. Their color scheme is consistent with what the board’s doing, but it’s still easy to tell where a tile has been placed.Ī tile-laying classic, Carcassonne is an area-control game in which players create the areas to be controlled on the fly. In addition, the tiles mesh well with the board. Tsuro bills itself as “beautiful and beautifully simple,” and I think these tiles capture that. Although the brown color scheme might seem drab in other games, here it feels–at least to me–relaxing. The paths are easy to see, but there’s still some color, and the mottled backgrounds lend visual interest. I don’t have an artist’s trained eye, but Tsuro’s tiles strike me as both attractive and functional. Whoever can stay on the board longest, extending her path without running off its edge, wins. It’s an elegant design: players put a tile down in front of their pieces, and then move forward along the path they’ve created. Tsuro is a personal favorite of mine, and its path-building gameplay was an inspiration for Lines of Questioning. So, let’s do the background research by looking at some cases–successful tile-laying games–and finding the rules that emerge from them. ![]() I’m not accustomed to doing that with graphic design issues, but there’s no reason why it shouldn’t work. While trying to decide what Lines of Questioning’s tiles should look like, I realized that I was breaking my own cardinal rule: approach questions as though they were legal problems, and solve them using the tools provided by legal analysis.

$1 to $2 a song for FLAC is just not an option. ![]() Buying CDs is still the cheapest option, because you can get deals on them new and used for under $10 each. You can easily convert them to another format with a batch converter without losing anything. I think it's crucial to use lossless files. It's nice to be able to have access to everything at work. I will be able to fit everything on my 6TB NAS server with room to spare, and have everything backed up twice, one on extra drives at home, another at work. I'm ripping in FLAC with dbpoweramp, correct some tagging and make playlists with Mediamonkey, and listen in three rooms with Squeezebox. Now that I'm digitizing my collection, it's not as big a deal. How old are you? I found that after about 10 years, I bought a lot of albums I previously weeded out by favorite groups. By then, my brain's had enough of the record for a lifetime. Wilco's a ghost is born is my favorite record of the decade, and I've barely listened to it since 2005. Honestly, though, I usually listen to records I love 30-40 times and then I can barely, if ever, listen to them again. I could never see myself only having a digital collection and nothing else - I'm sure I'll hang on to lots of my remaining CDs for as long as they can be played. However I've started replacing some CDs with vinyl for home listening and I intend to buy more nof my new music in vinyl form (really grateful to those labels who include a download coupon with the record). The main reason for me buying CDs over vinyl was portability - I've always done a large portion of my listening on the move and I had a CD walkman up until a few years back. I moved earlier this year and I've got slightly less room in the new house which certainly spurred me on and I'll be honest, it feels really good paring things down (I still have loads left though!). That said, I've got rid of/have boxed up to get rid of 350+ CDs this year, basically things I've gone off. This is partly because I like the physical object and partly 'cos the CDs I do still buy are mostly very cheap secondhand/bargain bin ones so it's cheaper just to rip from the disc. I've got pretty much my entire music collection in digital form on a 500gb hard drive (with another one as backup) for iPod purposes - however I only really buy singles digitally rather than whole albums. ![]() Is anyone else actively maintaining a digital record collection or planning on doing so? Where are you buying from? How are you storing and organizing everything?Īs I said, I'm sure that the audience for this thread on this board is relatively small, but I'm hoping there might be at least a few others out there who are going this route, and perhaps we can get a discussion going. I think that soon enough more and more artists will start going this route as CDs sales continue to tank. (5) A lot of artists are starting to do the whole LP + mp3/FLAC thing, and I have no desire to start collecting LPs. (4) There's a lot of stuff that's difficult for me to easily acquire where I live, and I've been able to find some stuff that I've had a lot of difficulty tracking down in brick-and-mortar stores on Amazon mp3 and iTunes. ![]() (3) I need less shit in my life in general. (2) I have a lot of books, and I'm not a fan of eBook readers, so I plan on acquiring many more books than I already own, and I don't want to maintain two physical media collections. I buy a CD, rip it into iTunes, and place it on my CD shelves, where it sits forever. (1) I'm 22, so I'm of the generation that sees CDs as nothing more than a storage medium. Most of the new music I buy is from Amazon mp3, although I'm currently searching for some good online stores that sell everything in FLAC. My goal is to eventually have as few physical CDs as possible, and I want all of my digital music to sit on two hard drives. I sold off a chunk of the collection in two batches, and I'm getting ready to sell off a third. The first step in this process has been culling my CD collection. Recently, I've decided to go (mostly) digital. ![]() The majority of posters on ILM seem to prefer their music on LPs and CDs, and I definitely see the appeal in doing that-up until very recently, I had to have everything in CD- but I think there might be a few others who, like me, are starting to purchase most of their music digitally. I'm not talking about buying a CD or LP and then digitizing it, but buying music natively in mp3, FLAC, or some other format. There's been some talk about digital music collections in the past on threads like The Data Migration Thread, but I wanted to start a new thread! dedicated solely to those of us who are actively building up (legally acquired) digital music collections. ![]() When we can leverage our buying power to get you great deals, we do it and pass the savings on to our customers. This interaction has also been observed in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in which the PSTPIP orthologue Bzz1p binds to the WASP orthologue Las17p ( Soulard et al., 2002). The best-characterised interaction is between F-BAR proteins and Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASP) or neuronal-WASP (N-WASP), which are regulators of the actin-nucleating Arp2/3 complex ( Ho et al., 2004). The most commonly reported function of F-BAR proteins in mammalian cells is cytoskeletal organisation, often in close proximity to the plasma membrane. This structure generates a crescent-shaped molecule that has a family-specific radius of curvature. This consolidates a trend among membrane-bending proteins that contain BAR, N-BAR or F-BAR domains: the consequence of domain dimerization is the formation of a central six-helical bundle, from which two helices protrude on either side. The recent determination of the crystal structures of the F-BAR domains of mammalian FCHO2, FBP17 and CIP4 reveals that these domains are also structurally similar to BAR domains – characteristically, an elongated dimer formed by the antiparallel interaction of two α-helical coiled coils, each a three-helical bundle ( Henne et al., 2007 Shimada et al., 2007). Basic residues on the concave surface bind to negatively charged lipids, such as phosphatidylserine or phosphatidylinositol (4,5)-bisphosphate, through electrostatic interactions ( Gallop and McMahon, 2005). The crystal structures of the N-BAR and BAR domains have revealed that they are crescent-shaped dimers binding to highly curved membranes (outer radius ∼11-15 nm) via the concave surface of the protein ( Gallop and McMahon, 2005). This displacement induces membrane curvature, which is then stabilised by the BAR domain ( Weissenhorn, 2005 Gallop et al., 2006 Masuda et al., 2006). ![]() The hydrophobic face of the helix can insert into the hydrophobic phase of the membrane-lipid bilayer, displacing the phospholipids therein. Proteins of the N-terminal amphipathic helices BAR (N-BAR) family, a subset of the BAR-domain family, contain an N-terminal amphipathic helix that precedes the consensus BAR domain ( Weissenhorn, 2005 Gallop et al., 2006). Thus, the F-BAR domain is likely to act as a membrane-targeting module during endocytosis. This work was expanded by Itoh and colleagues and Tsujita and colleagues, who demonstrated that the F-BAR domain has an affinity for phospholipid-containing liposomes and induces membrane tubulation both in vivo and in vitro ( Itoh et al., 2005 Tsujita et al., 2006). A mutant form of FBP17 that is unable to bind to dynamin induces the formation of tubules that remain attached to the plasma membrane, leading the authors to conclude that the F-BAR domain acts in a manner similar to BAR domains and that an interaction with dynamin is required for endocytosis. The most striking evidence for the involvement of F-BAR proteins in endocytosis came from the observation by Kamioka and colleagues ( Kamioka et al., 2004), who reported that FBP17 induces tubular invaginations of the plasma membrane, and that the F-BAR domain is necessary and sufficient for this. members of the PACSIN/syndapin and CIP4 subfamilies) can bind to dynamin ( Itoh et al., 2005 Tsujita et al., 2006 Kessels and Qualmann, 2004), a GTPase that catalyses vesicle budding and scission of the lipid bilayer from intracellular membranes during clathrin-mediated endocytosis ( Shafer and Voss, 2004). The first link was the finding that the SH3 domain of some members of the F-BAR family (i.e. A large body of evidence implicates F-BAR proteins – including formin-binding protein 17 (FBP17, also known as FNBP1), CIP4, transducer of Cdc42-dependent actin assembly 1 (Toca1 also known as FNBP1L), proline-serine-threonine phosphatase-interacting proteins 1 and 2 (PSTPIP1 and PSTPIP2, respectively) – in endocytosis ( Kessels and Qualmann, 2004).
